Sixty Javan Rhinos Remain
April 2011: Sorry...make that 30 Rhinos remaining
(See update from Indonesia below)

KILLED FOR THEIR HORNS
AND LEFT TO DIE
By Benjamin Levin-O'Leary

The Javan Rhinoceros is a critically endangered species from Southeast Asia. With less than sixty of them left they are the most highly endangered rhino in the world. These rhinos are much smaller than the more common white rhinos. At only ten to eleven feet long they can be up to five feet shorter than white rhinos at up to fifteen feet long. The black rhinoceros currently has approximately eleven thousand rhinos compared to the Javan rhino's sixty. Unfortunately, there are no Javan rhinos in captivity so conservation is not going well. The main reason for the decrease in Javan rhinoceros population is poaching for their horns. Rhinos are shot mostly for their horns and nothing else, then left to die in extreme pain.

Well, actually their number is less than 30 now. An NGO in Ujung Kulon have protection unit, another NGO setting camera trap, but they have no gut to announce the real number! They always said 50 – 60 for last 25 years. How come this number have no up and down? Also there are no scientific publicity about the population and distribution since 1994. Last year 3 rhinos died and found only bones left in Ujung Kulon. 2 rhino still have horn but no good investigation and forensic. Seems 3 rhino died is nothing for them! No crisis! It’s 10 % man! They only check on Anthrax where actually lots of fatal diseases for rhino there. Also all 3 carcass did not found by the protection unit (run by both NGOs) there and then no changes on their actions. What are they doing there? Poor javan rhino in Ujung Kulon! Now they even want to build electric-fencing and cut down rhino home-range within national park without any independent feasibility and risk study, and again no scientific document publicity. The Javan rhino will suffer because the electric fence will make a catastrophe their natural behavior and ecology. Javan rhino will soon follow Javan tiger. Disappear!
